Today I share Book Beginnings, hosted by Rose City Reader
and The Friday 56 with Freda’s Voice.
My book beginning this week is from “A Walk with Jane Austen: A Journey into Adventure, Love, and Faith” by Lori Smith.
Here is the beginning:
“It’s actually an uncomfortable thing to pursue one’s dreams, however attractive they may sound. Perhaps this is why most of us only dream dreams and never live them. For several years I have tried to err on the side of taking risks to live the life I want, to do the things I feel must be done. But there is a creeping, stealthy anxiety that has wound itself around me in such a way that I cannot escape, even here. So here I am, alternately anxious and pinch-myself-I-must-be-dreaming thrilled.”
Here is a description of the book from Goodreads:
“Step into a Life of Grace
At thirty-three, dealing with a difficult job and a creeping depression, Lori Smith embarked on a life-changing journey following the life and lore of Jane Austen through England.
With humor and spirit, Lori leads readers through landscapes Jane knew and loved–from Bath and Lyme, to London and the Hampshire countryside–and through emotional landscapes in which grace and hope take the place of stagnation and despair. Along the way, Lori explores the small things, both meanness and goodness in relationships, to discover what Austen herself knew: the worth of an ordinary life.”
“Almost any other woman of Jane’s age in this situation would have accepted Harris and hoped to learn to love him, or determined to live without love, but Jane could not.”
